“Why are we really going to St. Agnes this morning?” Bree asked Quin as they hurtled along the coast highway in the dusty green Land Rover at an amazing forty-five miles an hour. Amazing to Bree, at any rate. The engine had made some very ominous clunking and clanking noises when Quin first turned the key in the ignition; she’d figured the top end would max out under thirty.

“You heard Portia. She needs someone to collect her grocery order.”

Bree eyed the big redhead with skepticism. “Yes, I heard Portia. I also saw you elbow Flavio when he started to volunteer for the job. So again I say, why are we really going to St. Agnes this morning?”

Quin’s smile reminded her of those seen so often in Etruscan sculpture—calm, unruffled, and smug. “You do keep your eyes open, don’t you?”

“Flattery will get you everywhere, just not at the moment. Answer the question.”

“You’re a persistent wench.”

“Damn straight.”

He laughed. “All right, I admit to an ulterior motive or two. First, I have to run an errand for Dominic. While I’m doing that, I thought you might enjoy looking at the shops.”

“What kind of errand?”

“Hector Yuli, the thug Dominic surprised in Magnus Armstrong’s suite, lives in St. Agnes with his two older brothers and his dear old widowed mum. I’m to see if he’s around.”

“Dominic thinks Yuli may have been our burglar last night.”

Quin nodded.

“What else?”

“I beg your pardon?”

“You said, and I quote, ‘an ulterior motive or two.’ End quote. So what’s your second reason for volunteering to play errand boy?”

“I need to stop by the chemist’s, as well.”

“Why’s that?”

He shot her an inscrutable look. “To pick up some condoms.”

“Oh,” she said.
